Kara and I have been close since we met in 5th grade. We have the kind of friendship that is strong and vibrant when we’re together and a comfortable, safe place to go back to when we’re apart. Since meeting all those years ago we both have experienced the triumphs, heartaches and lessons that accompany life after childhood. It was in the wake of some of these experiences that we did this photo shoot of her and her son.

The conditions were less than perfect. We got rained on, didn’t get the sunset we hoped for and the perfect hairstyle Kara had done for the shoot was almost immediately ruined. Despite this we pressed on!
We did a full shoot and with a little help from my husband goofing around behind me, even her son had a great time in the less than ideal circumstances. When all was done we had some of the best candid moments of a mother and son enjoying a playful evening in the rain. Nobody would have known the original plans and intended look were “ruined”.

In reality this shoot is exactly how so many days in our lives turn out. We are constantly adjusting to the unexpected rainstorms that cloud the moment. It is so easy to only see the wet hair, the muddy ground and the dark sky. But when we choose to, sometimes we can find the picture perfect moments among all the mess too.
